My Top 10 World Hotels - Wed, 8 Mar 2006 08:30 +0000
Given that I am now a dad, and wont have quite as much time on my hands for travelling as I used to,
I've got to try and fill this blog with something else instead!
So here's my top 10 list of hotels that I've stayed in...
- 1 - Scottsdale Renaissance Resort, AZ, USA
- 2 - Coco Reef, Tobago
- 3 - Sheraton, Luxor, Egypt
- 4 - Yosemite View Lodge - Yosemite, CA, USA
- 5 - Marriot Residence Inn, Vancouver, Canada
- 6 - Mena House Oberoi, Giza (Cairo), Egypt
- 7 - Furnace Creek Ranch, Death Valley, CA, USA
- 8 - Edinburgh Novotel
- 9 - Toronto Colony, Toronto, Canada
- 10 - The Luxor, Las Vegas
This has to win, mainly because we got upgraded to a suite which we shouldn't have really had, so we had a hot tub in a private patio area out the back of the room, and it has a small kitchen area, a seperate bedroom and lounge.
Thanks to the standard of service, and the quality of the food every night of the week and the vicinity to Pigeon Point, this gets very high marks. The rooms are of good quality, but make sure you get an ocean view, that way you can watch the sunset every night.
This does well mainly on the standard of the food. In particular, the breakfast buffet is second to none! There is also a superb Indian restaurant here which you MUST visit for a very high quality curry. Make sure you get a Nile View, of course, so you can sit out on your balcony and watch the world go by.
Although this is not in the park itself, it's only just outside and its own location is splendid. Again, make sure you get a river view room as these have a balcony which opens out onto a cascading torrent of a river. They also have a little kitchen area, a roaring fire, and 2 huge beds. And the piece de la resistance is the double hot tub in the bathroom! Superb effort!
Great views available here from the upper floors. The room itself was a decent size, with a lounge area, well-equiped kitchen, including microwave and a complimentary microwave popcorn for your first night. Not the best location, as it's a little walk to the heart of the city, but you'll probably need the walk after putting away a hearty Canadian steak with jacket potato on the side!
This place has 5 stars, but sadly it was showing its age a bit when we stayed there which drops it down the table a bit. Rooms are fairly standard, but it has a great location, right at the pyramids itself which, again, you can pay extra to have a view of. Although, to be honest, once you've seen one pyramid, you've seen them all! It has a very deep pool which, even on the hottest, sunniest days does not get warm. It looks so, so inviting when it's in the 40s outside, but you can only stand it for a few minutes! On the plus side, the choice of restaurants is great, especially the Khan El Khalili, and of course the world famous Moghul Room Indian restaurant (although I think the one in Luxor beats it!)
Now, the hotel itself here was nothing special, but it had to make the top 10 because of its location. You have to remember, it's over 50 degrees C here for a large part of the year, but the fact that they actually manage to run a hotel and restaurant here at all is amazing! The rooms are fairly standard, and the restaurant is ok, serving the usual diner-style stodgy American food, but you really can't complain.
This does well because it was totally new when we stayed there. The rooms are done out in an individual, 'arty' style, and it has a great health spa with a pool and sauna. Decent enough location, just a short walk from the castle.
Again, decent standard rooms, and if you get an upper floor, a good view. We stayed in the winter, and the breakfast menu is ideally suited to this time of year, with hearty Canadian breakfasts, with eggs, bacon, muffins and all the trimmings. Location is good, just round the corner from the shopping at The Eaton Centre.
Although I wasn't a great fan of this place, it had to get a mention just because of the sheer ridiculous-ness of the place. OK, all of Vegas is the same - totally over the top - but to recreate 10000 years of Egyptian history in the middle of the Nevada desert is pretty mad!
The problem with Vegas hotels is that they're TOO big and it'll take you 20 minutes to walk out of the place in the mornings (I think that's the idea, anyway - the longer you stay, the more you spend). The Asian Fusion restaurant is worth a visit as it's a bit different, and the breakfast buffet is pretty comprehensive and great value for money. You could easily fill up here for breakfast and not need any more food until the evening!
