Edinburgh - April 2004 - Wed, 28 Apr 2004 09:03 +0000
We went to Edinburgh over the weekend. And what a lovely little city it is. We stayed in
the brand new Novotel, just south of the castle. We didn't realise it was brand new, so that was a nice
surprise. Usually, hotels are just all the same, with the same type of decor, the same style of rooms, etc. But this
was all done out in a very modern style, with all sorts of funky shaped sinks, and modern art up on the walls. It wasn't
that expensive, either.
On the Saturday we did a few of the museums - The People's Story, Museum of Childhood and The Museum of Edinburgh (formerly
the Huntly House Museum). These are all free, and worth a visit. My favourite was the Museum of Childhood, which had
all sorts of stuff which will make you say "Oh yeah! I remember those!". It even has an old Space Invaders arcade game
which you can have a go at.
In the evening we went for a curry at the Bay Of Bengal on the Royal Mile. Curry houses seem to be pretty sparse in Edinburgh,
so we were lucky to find this! The food was very nice indeed - I've had better, but if you like curries, it's
well worth a visit.
The next morning I tucked into my Fry Up at the Novotel, and even had some haggis. I wasn't as disgusted as I thought
I might be - it was just 'ok' really. Nothing to write home about, but not foul, either!
Sunday was about getting dragged round the shops. Some shops didn't open til midday (Frasers) but most were
open by 11am. It's nod bad for shops, but if you're used to the likes of Bluewater or Oxford Street, it won't
blow you away. But Jenners is worth a look - some of the whiskies they have for sale look mighty tasty! It's a bit
like Liberty in London inside, with a large atrium running through the middle. The clothes are a bit 'old' for me,
but the food hall was well worth a visit with loads of tasty, tasty treats for sale!.
The flights were completely uneventful. We flew up on easyJet - it only took about 55-60 mins, and the 100 Airlink bus
into the city is extremely regular so you have no trouble getting into town. Getting about is best done on foot, as most of
the stuff worth seeing is all close together. It's quite hard work, though, as there are quite a few hills around!
